Sensei Al Jelly ( 4th-Dan )

Grading officer for Oldham bkk

Sensei Al Jelly, coach and founder of the club based at St Benets Church Hall, in Abbey Grove, who started the club 12 years ago, revealed it has had several champions over the years and says, potentially, there are several more. He said: "It is a good family club. We have some great students coming through and my fees are still the same as they were when I started the club." Jelly, who took up karate as a means of fitness and self-defence more than 20-years-ago, had two ambitions when he began the martial arts sport. He said: "Initially, I was inspired by a guy called Tom Bowman, who had a place called The Tokei at London Bridge. "When I started, my goal was to achieve a Kyokushinkai black-belt, which I did in 1985, and then represent England, which I did the following year in Wales, in a home international tournament. "Kyokushinkai karate is one of the strongest forms of this martial art there is. There are several tournaments we enter including: knock-down, which is full contact; the wuko tournaments, which is a points system; and clicker, where a referee scores points as he sees them with a clicker in his hand.
